October: Magic, Mystery & Shadow

How is everyone doing? We’ve made it through the September eclipses and wow, weren’t they something else? Some of you may be grieving what’s been lost or left behind, while others are celebrating fresh new beginnings and finally taking a long-overdue deep breath. The atmosphere, both individually and collectively, has been intense, to say the least. September dismantled our psyche, piece by piece, inviting us to examine what stays, what must go, and why. Eclipses always facilitate change. Some fragments of the past may still be lingering, leaving us feeling raw as we hold on for just a little longer. But as they say, time waits for no one; and here we are, stepping into the final quarter of 2025.

October traditionally is a month of magic and mystery, where the veil between shadow and light is not so easily defined. The standard rules and constructs of modern society also loosen their boundaries as the collective celebrates their darker side by giving it physical form through costumes, masks, spooky décor, and alter-egos. All under the guise of “good fun,” yet rooted in something far deeper. We lower our inhibitions and with a mischievous smile, invite the things that go bump in the night to come dance with us. A sense of mystery and delight replace criticism and perhaps even a little bit of fear, as we cavort with the “spirits of the season”.

This October however, echoes with more significance. It feels like a continuation of the story shaped by last month’s powerful astrological transits. Like Persephone’s descent or Ereshkigal’s dominion in the underworld, we too are asked to bravely walk into the dark to piece together the fragments of ourselves that were unearthed by September’s eclipses. This is not a passive journey. With each step, we reclaim what is ours and lay down intentions for what is to come. We are weaving endings and beginnings with the same thread.

2025 is a “9” year in numerology, a number that represents completion, wisdom and the liminal space between death and rebirth. It’s a similar “vibe” to the theme of October. The final “dark months” of this year serve as a reminder that descent, while not always pleasant, is not destruction. It signals transformation. Every rebirth begins in darkness. What we resolve and/or leave behind now fertilizes the ground for what’s next, clearing space for renewal and the first signs of a new cycle to emerge. Personally, I am excited to see what the next chapter brings!

As we move through October, certain crystals and herbs can be especially supportive for grounding, protection, and renewal. Think of them as tools to steady your energy, clear away what no longer serves you, and strengthen your intentions. Here are some allies you may want to work with this month.
